Nothe Fort

 

The Nothe Fort in Weymouth first foundations were laid in 1860, The royal engineers and inmates from the prison at Portland constructed the building ready for completion by 1872 to house massive cannons as part of the Portland Harbour defences.

The Nothe Fort was constructed using a range of materials including Portland stone, brick and granite. It was constructed in the shape of a horse shoe and has 3 levels and approximately 70 rooms (Ramparts, Courtyard and Magazines).

In 1961 Weymouth and Portland borough council took over the Nothe and it was restored by the Weymouth Civic Society.

The Nothe is now a museum of coastal defence and is surrounding by the gardens of the Nothe which attracts many visitors in summer. A pay and display carpark area is provided by the fortress in the gardens, which provides excellent views of Weymouth Harbour and beach, Portland and the surrounding coastline.
